Tyngsborough was once part of the original Dunstable Township and was first settled by Colonel Jonathan Tyng in 1661. It was named for his mother, Mrs. Edward Tyng, who emigrated from Dunstable, England. The Tyngs were among the early settlers of the land purchased from the Wamisit and Naticook Indians in 1661 for £20 sterling. Tyngsborough broke away from Dunstable and was incorporated as a town on February 23, 1809.
As the town grew, Tyngsborough became known for its ferries, quarries, and box companies. Tyngsborough was a vacation community with a large seasonal population until the late 1960s.
Tyngsborough is probably best known for its green painted single-arched iron bridge over the Merrimack. The bridge was built in 1931 as a replacement for an earlier wooden planked structure, becoming the town’s emblem and the major river crossing for Massachusetts and New Hampshire residents.
The 1,140-acre Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsborough State Forest is a popular attraction in the area, with 180 acres of ponds, swamps, and wetlands. The forest has six miles of trails offering hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Hunting is permitted in season.
The Old Town Hall is a historic town hall building on Kendal Road in Tyngsborough. The wood frame building was built in 1834 as a church to house the local Baptist congregation. It served as a church until it was sold to the town in 1857. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
