Cohasset was first settled in 1670. Originally, Cohasset was known as Hingham’s Second Parish. The town’s name came from the Algonquian word “Conahasset,” meaning “long rocky place.” Much of the land was originally granted to the “Conahasset Partners” Cohasset became a town separate from Hingham in 1770 and was incorporated in 1775.
Although the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth in 1620, the first European visited Cohasset in 1614. He was Captain John Smith of Pocahontas fame from the Virginia Colony.
A large portion of the southwestern part of town is occupied by the Wompatuck State Park (formerly the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex), and the Whitney & Thayer Woods Reservation.
“The Witches of Eastwick,” a 1987 American comedy-fantasy film based on John Updike’s novel of the same name, was filmed on location in Cohasset and surrounding towns. Directed by George Miller, the film starred Jack Nicholson as Daryl Van Horne, alongside Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Susan Sarandon as the eponymous witches.
Located on Elm St., the 1810 Captain John Wilson House contains period household furnishings and exhibits about 19th century life in Cohasset. Built by David Nichols, the house was bought shortly thereafter by Captain John Wilson. The house remained in the Wilson family until 1912. The Wilson House is the last unaltered example of the 19th century residences that once made up Cohasset’s center village.
The 1760 Maritime Museum on Elm Street was built as a ship chandlery (retail and wholesale source of supplies for both individual seamen and ships) for the Bates fishing business. The museum, which was originally located at the harbor, houses maritime aritifacts that reflect Cohasset’s long seafaring history.
Currently the home of the Bellingham Historical Society, the 1902 Paul Pratt building on South Main Street was designed by Edward Nichols, a Cohasset native and Boston architect. The Pratt Building was built in 1903 as a central library building for both the private Paul Pratt Memorial Library and the Cohasset Free Public Library.
Catherine Ann “Kate” Bosworth, was born in Los Angeles, on January 2, 1983. An actress, singer and model, Bosworth graduated from Cohasset High School in 2001.
Stephen Gerard Bowen was born in Cohasset on February 13, 1964. Bowen is a United States Navy submariner and a NASA astronaut. He was the second submariner to travel into space. Bowen has been on three spaceflights, all of which were Space Shuttle missions to the International Space Station.
Albert Augustus Pope was born in Boston on May 20, 1843. He was a Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in the Union Army. He wasn an industrialist and founder of Columbia Bicycles and the Pope-Hartford automobile. He died on August 10, 1909 in Cohasset.
