According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Franklin was ranked 255th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 263rd in 2012. However, it was 265th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 244h in 2012.

Franklin was first settled by Europeans in 1660 and officially incorporated on February 16, 1778. The town was formed from the western part of the town of Wrentham. Initially, the name of the town was supposed to be Exeter. But the town’s citizens wanted to be called Franklin in honor of Benjamin Franklin. It was the first municipality in the United States to be named Franklin. The townspeople had hoped that Franklin would donate a bell for a church steeple in the town, but he donated 116 books instead.
Franklin was named one of Family Circle’s 2007 “Ten Best Towns for Families” in the United States. This honor was bestowed on Franklin and nine other towns and small cities “that offer what parents and children want most – affordable homes, good jobs, top-rated schools, open spaces, and a lot less stress.”
Beaver Pond on Beaver Street offers good fishing for large mouth bass and the boat launch is just west of the parking lot. Beaver Pond is also known for its soccer fields, woodland trails, and swimming.
The DelCarte Property located on the southeast side of Pleasant Street, offers a short network of trails for walkers who want to enjoy the woods as well as small, shallow water ponds. The pathways are shaded by white pine, oak, and sassafras. Osprey, Canada geese and a mute swan can be seen in their natural habitat.
The Franklin Town Forest – not to be confused with the Franklin State Forest – is a more than 180 acre preserve that is located across the street from 373 Summer Street. The town Forest has many hiking trails, with rock walls, streams, wild flowers and pine groves.
Horace Mann, born in Franklin on May 4, 1796, was an American politician and educational reformer. He served in the Massachusetts State Legislature from 1827–37. He served as the Secretary of the Massachusetts State Board of Education from its inception in 1837 until 1848, when he was elected to the U.H. House of Representatives. Mann died on August 2, 1859 in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Ilario Zannino was born in Roxbury on June 15, 1920. He lived with his family for a time in Franklin and graduated from Franklin High School in 1938. Zannino’s relatives owned a pig farm in Stoughton, where it was believed that the body of a murdered Greek-American mob associate, James Bratsos, was buried. No one has ever been charged in these murders.
Peter Philip Laviolette Jr. was born in Franklin on December 7, 1964. He is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman and current head coach of the Nashville Predators. He has previously coached the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, and Philadelphia Flyers. In 2006 he coached the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup.
