Holbrook’s first settlers in 1634 were the Cochatos, Algonquian-speaking Native Americans. Holbrook was first settled by Europeans (mostly British colonists) in 1710 as the southern part of Old Braintree. It was officially incorporated on February 29, 1872, the last town created from land that had belonged to Braintree. Holbrook was formerly known as East Randolph and was divided from Randolph by tracks from the Old Colony Railroad line.
At the time of its incorporation, Holbrook was a leading center of boot and shoe production in the United States. Holbrook residents served during the Civil War. Some members of the famed 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry are buried in Union Cemetery. It was during the Civil War that the production of shoes and boots, which were needed for soldiers, became a significant component of the town’s economic life, and production moved from the home and into factories.
