The town of Hanson was incorporated in 1820, but settlers occupied the area as early as 1632 when the site was still considered the western parish of Pembroke. Hanson took its name from U.S. Senator and Maryland newspaper publisher Alexander Contee Hanson. For most of the town’s life its industry was comprised of farming, bog iron and quarrying but Hanson is now a largely residential community with a population of just over 10,000.
Hanson is best known as the birthplace of the Ocean Spray corporation, which began as a cranberry farming operation in two nearby bogs. The company’s headquarters remained in Hanson until 1970, when they moved to nearby Plymouth.
When you’re in Hanson, it’s worth checking out Camp Kiwanee on the shores of Maquan Pond. Available for weddings and conference hall rentals, Camp Kiwanee also stages a recreation drama and features public swimming at Cranberry Cove, which has been in operation since the 1940s. And if you have any interest in antique furniture, it’s worth stopping by The Attic Fanatic, a shop on Hanson’s main street dedicated to restoring well-loved furniture from the past.
Hanson calls a number of famous Americans its own. First is Albert Cushing Read, who in May 1919 commanded a crew of five men in a NC-4 Curtiss flying boat and made the first-ever transatlantic flight. Kristen Anne Mewis, meanwhile, is an American professional soccer player who plays for the United States women’s national soccer team. And the only undefeated heavyweight champion in professional boxing’s history, Rocky Marciano, had a house on Main Street in Hanson.
