The town’s name comes from the Wampanoag word for “a place of resting,” and was originally settled as part of Rochester in 1750. As of the 2010 census, the town had just over 6000 permanent residents.
Mattapoisett was known for its whaling and shipbuilding industry—over a period of 130 years, the town’s shipyards built more than 400 vessels. One was the Acushnet, which Moby-Dick author Herman Melville crewed and later deserted. The town also had a large-scale salt works which processed sea water to create usable salt.

And it’s always worth a visit to Ned’s Point Lighthouse, which features a view that can’t be beat along with a much-needed dose of peace and quiet.
More than few famous Americans hail from Mattapoisett, for example Eunice Randall. She was Boston’s first female announcer and engineer.
