Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Marion area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
Originally known as “Sippican”, Marion was first settled in 1679 as a district of Rochester, MA. The name referred to the river which passes through the heart of town and was the Wampanoag name of the local tribe. Tensions in the 1840s with neighboring Mattapoisett, however, led to the incorporation of Marion—named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion—in 1852. Now, the town has just under 5000 permanent residents along with a host of summer visitors.
Marion is mostly known as the home of local sea captains and sailors. Nearby Buzzards Bay has served for centuries as a dual-purpose source of income for the town, both from fishing boats and the summer tourism industry.
If you’re in Marion, it’s worth checking out Sippican Harbor which features historic Bird Island Light lighthouse and Meadow Island tide pool along with a host of sailing classes and unique shops. Or head to the Marion Natural History Museum and get an inside look at what makes this part of New England so unique.
Several famous Americans called Marion home, including Benjamin Briggs, master mariner at the heart of the Mary Celeste mystery. Novelist Henry James also hailed from Marion, and is often regarded as the a key figure in the rise of 19th century literary realism.
Marion also enjoyed a large number of famous summer residents such as president Grover Cleveland and Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. More recent summer guests include actor James Spader and TV personality Geraldo Rivera.
