Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Rochester area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
The town of Rochester was settled on a parcel of lands known as “Sippican” by the local Wampanoags. English settlers arrived in the late 1670s and the original town site included portions of Mattapoisett, Marion and Wareham. In 1686 the town was officially incorporated and named after the town of Rochester, England. Eventually, both Marion and Mattapoisett split from Rochester, turning it into a largely residential community. Today, the town has just over 5000 permanent residents.
Through the mid-1800s, Rochester enjoyed success with large-scale shipbuilding and whaling operations thanks to its location on Mattaposett Harbor and the coast of Buzzards Bay. In 1852, however, the town of Marion separated and incorporated and in 1857 Mattapoisett did the same. Unfortunately, this left Rochester landlocked and spelled the end of any water-based industries. Today, the Rochester is mostly rural with several farms located close to the to town center — local farmers enjoy the protection of excellent “right to farm” laws.
If you’re in Rochester, make sure to stop by the East Over Reservation, easily one of the most idyllic nature and park sites in the area. With a multitude of trails, woodlands and the beauty of Leonard’s pond East Over is a great place for casual walk, longer hike or if you’re looking to capture superb nature and wildlife photos.
The most famous American from Rochester is Joseph Bates, an American seaman and revivalist minister. He was forced into British Navy servitude at a young age but after his release continued with the organization, eventually attaining the rank of Captain. During his time with the Navy he was compelled to attend Anglican services, and became an ardent supporter of the separation between church and state. After his career at sea ended, he attempted to find religious meaning and was introduced to the seventh-day Sabbath by T. M. Preble. This led Bates to develop his own line of religious thinking, and today he is best known as the founding father of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
