The town of Rockland was originally part of Abington and settled in 1673. By the late 1870s the town separated and on March 9th, 1874 was officially incorporated as Rockland. Its name comes from the rocky countryside which makes the area better for factories than farming — the town is now home to a number of historic factories.
Rockland has a largely uneventful history. During King Philip’s War the town was used as a raiding encampment for attacks on nearby Scituate, and until 1996 held a portion of the South Weymouth Naval Air Station landing strips. Today, the town is mostly residential with a population of around 18,000 permanent residents. Many artists are also attracted to Rockland and use its former factory buildings as places to meet, work and be inspired.
Rockland is home to a number of buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. If you’re in town, it’s worth stopping by the Grand Army of the Republic Hall, the Phoenix Building or Rockland Almshouse. It’s also worth checking out the town’s Art Walks, which happen the first Friday of every month at 5:00pm from May through December.
A number of famous Americans have called Rockland home. There’s Lou Antonelli, an author who specializes in alternate and secret histories, or astronaut Brian Duffy, who has blasted beyond the stratosphere in four space shuttle missions. Professional skateboarder PJ Ladd — sometimes called an “east coast legend” also hails from Rockland.
