Settled in 1651, West Bridgewater was originally part of Olde Bridgewater. In 1822, the town split from Olde Bridgewater and was the second portion of the town to do so — both North and East Bridgewater also chose to break from their parent community. Today, West Bridgewater is mostly residential with a population of just under 7000.
West Bridgewater has a relatively quiet history, with both agrarian and industrial enterprises driving much of its economic success. The Town River provided much-needed power for industry to flourish, and the town is home to the first industrial park in the United States, now the Town Park. In addition, West Bridgewater claims the oldest standing parsonage in the U.S., the Keith House, which was built in 1662.
Looking for something to do in West Bridgewater? Try War Memorial Park, which contains a large number of historic artifacts donated when the park was created in 1936. Matfield Maple Farm is also worth a trip. This family-owned farm has been handcrafting maple syrup for the past 15 years — stop by for a walking tour, information sessions and of course the chance to buy some sweet maple treats.
A number of famous Americans hail from West Bridgewater, including comedian and TV personality Jack Gallagher, who is also an accomplished playwright. The town was also home to Cyrus Alger, an inventor and owner of the shop that produced the first rifled gun.
