The town of Whitman began as part of Abington in 1670, but eventually split and was incorporated in 1875. At first the new town was known as Little Comfort; in 1886 the name Whitman was adopted in honor of Augustus Whitman of South Abington. Today, Whitman is largely residential with a population of just under 15,000.
The small town of Whitman has left its mark on American history. In terms of industry, Whitman was deeply rooted in shoemaking, with both Regal Shoe and Bostonian Shoe calling the town home. At one time, more than 20 shoemakers were active in Whitman. A number of “firsts” also occurred in the town. The Whitman savings bank was the first in the country to offer savings bank life insurance and in the late 1930s Ruth Graves Wakefield baked the world’s first chocolate chip cookie at the Toll House Inn.
Looking for something to do in Whitman? It’s worth stopping by the site of the Toll House Restaurant, which burned down in 1984, or the site of former amusement park King’s Castle Land near the intersection of Routes 18 and 14. It’s also worth checking out the Venus Cafe, founded by former professional wrestler Pete “The Golden Greek,” and Peaceful Meadows dairy farm, the only dairy still in full operation around Whitman and famous for its ice cream.
Several famous Americans have called Whitman home. There’s Ruth Wakefield, inventor of the chocolate chip cookie and Sean Conover, defensive end for the St. Louis Rams. Also from Whitman are fantasy author and editor James Lowder and drummer Steve Smith, best known as part of the rock band Journey.
