Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Chelsea area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
The area around Chelsea was originally called Winnisimmet in the Massachusett tongue, meaning “good spring nearby.” It was settled in 1624 by Samuel Maverick, who established a permanent trading post near Boston Harbor. The town of Chelsea was part of Boston until 1739 when it split off, incorporated and was named after a neighborhood in London, England.
In the latter portion of the 1850s, Chelsea transitioned from a largely residential community to one focused on industry. Wooden sailing ship construction flourished but with the introduction of steam power, factories began to spring up along the banks of Boston Harbor, everything from rubber and elastic plants to those making boots, shoes and stoves. The town was also home to the Chelsea Naval Hospital and home for soldiers.
Chelsea has endured some hardship; in both 1908 and 1973 raging fires swept through the town, destroying both homes and businesses. By 1990, Chelsea was in dire economic and political shape, and control of City Hall was taken by the state. After its return to the people of Chelsea, a council-manager government system was formed—the town dug itself out of trouble and is now enjoying a period of renewed cultural and economic growth.
If you’re in Chelsea, stop by the Chelsea Clock Company, which has been handcrafting high quality timepieces for over a century. The company still operates out of its original headquarters, both building new clocks and repairing antiques. The town of Chelsea is also home to eight locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Chelsea Garden Cemetery, Naval Hospital Boston Historic District, and Revere Beach Parkway are all worth visiting.
Several famous Americans hail from Chelsea, including author Horatio Alger, NHL hall of famer Carl Voss and heavyweight boxing champion John Ruiz.
