According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Winthrop was ranked 154th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 187th in 2012. It was 70th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” declining from 201st in 2012.

Winthrop is one of the oldest settlements in the United States, originally colonized by pilgrims in 1630 and called Pulling Point because of the strong tides in Boston Harbor which made pulling difficult for boatmen. The town was annexed by Boston in 1632 and used as a grazing area, then divided into several parcels of land.
In 1739, Winthrop along with current-day Chelsea and Revere withdrew from Boston to form the town of Chelsea. In 1846, Winthrop and Revere withdrew from Chelsea to form North Chelsea and in 1852 the town split from Revere and became Winthrop. Today, this ocean-side community is largely suburban with a population of just under 18,000.
Winthrop is home to the oldest continually inhabited residence in the United States, the Deane Winthrop House. Deane was the youngest son of the town’s namesake, Governor John Winthrop and although the house is still occupied today, the town’s historical society makes it available to the public at specified times. Despite becoming a city in 2006 when its new Town Charter took effect, Winthrop chose to remain a “town” in name.
