Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Ashburnham area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
The area around Ashburnham was originally settled in 1736 but the town wasn’t incorporated until 1765. Its name may be drawn from the Earl of Ashburnham, Pembrey or the Sussex community of the same name. Today, Ashburnham is mostly residential with a population of just over 6000.
While Ashburnham itself has a relatively quiet history—its biggest industries were hog farming, wood ash, and peral ash—the founding of the town is of some interest. It began in 1690 when the state of Massachusetts organized a retaliatory strike on Quebec, Canada for a series of French and Indian attacks. The strike was a failure and the soldiers were never paid for their work. As a result, they petitioned both the Great and General courts and were eventually granted lands which would become current-day Ashburnham.
Despite its small size, Ashburnham is full of interesting places to see and things to do. If you’re the outdoorsy type, both the Wapack Trail and Massachusetts Midstate Trail begin in Ashburnham. The town is also home to Mount Watatic, which was named one of the top 1000 places to visit in Massachusetts by the Great Places in Massachusetts Commission. And if you’ve got an ear for music, it’s worth stopping by the Frederick historic piano collection.
A number of notable Americans have called Ashburnham home. These include Ivers Whtiney Adams, founder and president of Boston’s first baseball team, the Boston Red Stockings, along with defender of the Alamo Amos Pollard and legendary screen actress Bette Davis, who attended the town’s prestigious Cushing Academy. Other notable Cushing alums include King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk of Bhutan and TV personality Nate Berkus.
