According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Mashpee was ranked 66th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 80th in 2012. It was 73rd for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” declining from 108th in 2012.

English colonists originally settled the area around present-day Mashpee during the late 1650s in part thanks to the work of missionary Richard Bourne from the nearby town of Sandwich. By 1763 the area was designated a plantation and 1870 the state of Massachusetts incorporated Mashpee as a town, making it the second-to-last jurisdiction on Cape Cod to make the transition. Today, the town is mostly residential with a population of just over 14,000.
Much of Mashpee’s history is tied to the Wampanoag indigenous peoples who originally inhabited the area. Even the name is taken from a combination of Wampanoag words: “Mass” which means “great” or “greater” and “nippe” which means water, referring to nearby Wakeby Lake, which is larger at one end. For a time in the late 1700s the Wampanoag were given self-government rights on Mashpee land but were eventually absorbed by the municipality. Today, the town stands as the headquarters of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and contains the most federally recognized members.

Several famous Americans have called Mashpee home. There’s Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, TV personality and chef Rachel Ray and founder of Dunkin’ Donuts William Rosenberg, who passed away in his childhood Mashpee home in 2002.
