Eastham History

The area around Eastham was originally inhabited by the indigenous Nauset tribe, which first made contact with the Pilgrims in 1620 when a hunting party from the Mayflower went in search of supplies. This region of Cape Cod, however, was not settled until 1644 when a number of towns—including Truro, Wellfleet, and Orleans—were established. Eastham was incorporated in 1651 and today has a population of just under 5000.

What Eastham is Known for…

Eastham’s claim to fame is as the “gate” of the Cape Code National Seashore, established by John F. Kennedy to protect the area from overpopulation and erosion. It’s also the birthplace of Freeman Hatch, who holds the world record for sailing from San Francisco around Cape Horn and then on to Boston in a single-hull ship; Freeman’s Northern Light made the trip in just 76 days.

Historic Places and Recreation Spots

If you’re in Eastham it’s worth checking out Great Pond and Herring Pond—Great Pond boasts two public beaches and allows water skiing on even-numbered days. Several sites on the National Register of Historic Places are also located in Eastham; there’s the Eastham Windmill, Nauset Light, and the Edward Penniman House and Barn. Curious about Eastham’s history? Then stop by the 1869 Schoolhouse Museum or the Antique Tool Museum, both maintained by the Eastham Historical Society.

Famous People from Eastham

While Freeman Hatch is the most famous person born in Eastham, the town has enjoyed celebrity in other ways. Henry David Thoreau wrote about the town in Cape Cod, and Henry Beston penned The Outermost House while living in town.
