Barre History

Barre is a small town in Worcester County, originally called the Northwest District of Rutland and first settled in 1720. By 1774 the town was incorporated and called Hutchinson after the colonial governor of Massachusetts, Thomas Hutchinson. On November 7th, 1776, the town was renamed Barre to honor Isaac Barre, an Irish-born Member of Parliament and staunch supporter of American independence. Today, the town is mostly residential with a population of just over 5000.

What Barre is Known for…

Barre has enjoyed a quiet, agrarian history in large measure. During the Industrial Revolution, farm equipment manufacturing was a significant industry, along with the making of palm leaf hats. When the United States was plunged into civil war, Barre did its part to help the Union Army by supplying large amounts of much-needed gunpowder.

Several notable Americans have called Barre home. These include Congressman Timothy Jenkins, state senator Stephen Brewer and Confederate general Daniel Ruggles. Jacob Riis, author of “How the Other Half Lives” also hails from Barre.
