Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Harwich area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (150 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
The area around Harwich was settled in 1670 as part of Yarmouth but split off and incorporated in 1694. At that time, the town contained parts of Brewster, which later seceded to form their own community. During its early years, Harwich attracted residents thanks to a rapidly expanding cranberry industry. Today the town has just over 12,000 permanent residents and is a popular vacation spot.
Harwich is considered by some to be the birthplace of cranberry farming in the United States, and the first commercial facility began operating in 1846. Although many of the cranberry bogs in town still produce fruit, most of the farmers have moved on and current industry is largely focused on tourism. Harwich is also the start and finish line of the “Sail Around the Cape” race, in which ships must sail counter-clockwise around the Cape and return using the Cape Cod Canal.
If you’re in Harwich during September, it’s worth staying for the annual Harwich Cranberry Festival, well known for its spectacular fireworks display. During the summer months you can also catch a Harwich Mariners game. If you’d rather find a piece of history than watch the Cape Cod Leaguers check out the Harwich Antique Center, which features more than 40 dealers.
Several notable Americans have called Harwich home. There’s Shawn Flemming, creator of MP3 downloading site Napster and A. Elmer Crowell, a master decoy maker whose work on shorebirds and waterfowl is still regarded as some of the best in the world.
