5 Wild Summer Safety Hazards You Should Know
It’s time for warm weather, sunny days, and…safety hazards? It’s true: summertime may hold many days of sunbathing, beach outings, and barbecues, but it also brings with it some wild risks you need to know about. We’re going beyond your standard sunburn and dehydration to some strange dangers you wouldn’t even think about – but should.
Keep these potential risks in mind along with all the fun summer plans you’ve got going on. A little extra caution can make all the difference between a safe and happy summer season, and a summer of unexpected disaster.
Beware Your Wire Grill Brush
Want some sharp wire with your barbecue? While most wouldn’t even think to check their grill for stray grill brush hairs, the truth is wire grill brush accidents have sent thousands of people to the ER over the last several years alone.
The hairs left behind on the grill after brushing end up in your burger or ribs, and ultimately in your throat. Yikes. Better double (or maybe triple) check your grill for random wire brush hairs that have been left behind before you fire it up for your next backyard party.
To Trampoline or Not to Trampoline?
Kids love a trampoline, but sadly, the trampoline doesn’t always love them back. In fact, trampoline accidents send approximately 100,000 people to the ER every single year – with the vast majority of injuries occurring in children under 14.
If your child simply must play on a trampoline, allow just one jumper at a time, and only if the trampoline is fitted with a safety cage. Young jumpers should also be supervised at all times when using the trampoline.
Property Crimes Rise in Summertime
It’s hot, so you throw all your windows open – especially at night so you can sleep. Makes sense, except that it creates prime entry points for burglars. Unfortunately, household property crimes happen more often in the summertime than in any other season.
If you’re going to keep some windows cracked (and even if you’re not) use video surveillance and a home burglary system to protect your property and your family at all times.
Stay Away from that ATV
If someone shows up at a summertime party with an ATV, think twice before getting on. Over half a million people have suffered ATV-related injuries over the last few years. When not used properly they are prone to crashes and flips that can turn your fun summer event into a tragedy. The risk exists for bystanders, too, not just riders. There are many exciting activities to enjoy in summer – If you must ride do it safely.
Fires, Fires Everywhere
Homes are particularly at risk of fire in the summertime thanks to barbecue grills, fireworks, and, depending on where you live, wildfires. A good fire alarm system in your home will alert you immediately when these types of dangers pose a threat.
In addition, if the beach you visit allows bonfires, be mindful of buried embers, they can still be hot the next day and burn bare feet, if stumbled upon.
