Home Security: Make Your Yard Safe for Summer
Warm weather has finally made its way back to New England. We have a long summer ahead of us to enjoy cookouts, bonfires, or even relaxing in a lounge chair with a good book. But before you enjoy all the benefits of being outside, make sure your yard is a safe place for your family.
Secure your pool area
Accidental drowning is the number one cause of death of children between ages 1-4. Take precautions to keep your children safe. All residential pools should be fenced in (for specific requirements, check with your town building department or board of health). Pools and spas should be properly covered when not in use, and children should never be left unattended by a pool. We also recommend installing alarms on doors and gates leading to the pool area. Keep a safe parameter around grills and fire pits
The NFPA advises that grills and fires should always be placed away from you home and trees. Do not allow children or pets to play around grills or fires. In the event of a fire, never hesitate to call the fire department. If you see flames shooting out the sides of your grill or fire pit, do not panic. Clear everyone safely away, and turn off the fuel source if you can safely get to it. Always make sure a fire extinguisher is nearby.
Install cameras to keep an eye outdoors
According to law enforcement, burglars are more active during the warmer months. A video surveillance system will deter potential thieves and give your home security an extra level of protection. Video monitoring is also a great way to keep an eye on your children playing outdoors.
Inspect yard for hazards
Your family will be spending much more time outdoors, so make sure it is a safe environment for them. Clean up any hazards in your yard, such as holes or sharp objects. Cut your lawn to prevent unwanted pest’s or animals in your yard. If pests are already present, call a professional company to come exterminate them.
Summer is to short to waste indoors, so clean up your yard and enjoy it!
