Protecting Your Home During Vacation
According to the FBI, here in the United States, a home burglary takes place every 14.6 seconds.
It’s easy to say it won’t happen to you, until it does. In fact, it happened to my family three years ago. Money, jewelry and precious memories stolen, and it all happened while on vacation, when the house was supposed to be empty.
Here are some simple steps to help protect your home while you’re away.
Tip #1: Hold Your Mail
Nothing says “I haven’t been home in awhile” like an overflowing mailbox.
Tip #2: Hide your “Hide a Key”
Remember that spare key you keep close to the front door? Stash it for now. Burglars will be looking for it too.
Tip #3: Reduce Your Electrical Use
Gone are the days of leaving extra lights on to make it look like someone is home. Instead, unplug everything and keep the thermostat at a moderate level at all times.
Tip #4: Use your safe or buy a new safe for your home.
It should go without saying, but even the most well-intentioned families may forget to put their valuables in their safe when they’re away.
Tip #5: Never announce your vacation on social media
Don’t announce it beforehand, and don’t post photos of you while on vacation. Wait until you’re back at home to share your memories.
In addition to a personal safe, installing a professional home security system for your home is a must if you really want to protect your home.
It’s given my family the peace of mind we needed to feel safe again, whether we leave our home for three minutes, three days or three weeks.
