The area around modern-day Yarmouth was home to a number of indigenous groups. During the European colonization of the United States, the Wampanoag, who called it “Mattacheese”, inhabited the lands. Yarmouth was incorporated on September 3, 1639 as part of the Plymouth Colony and was named after Great Yarmouth in Norfolk County, England, located at the mouth of the river Yare.
Early industry in Yarmouth centered on farming and other agricultural endeavors such as pig, sheep, and cattle ranches. Supporting such large livestock efforts, however, required massive amounts of lumber and by the end of the nineteenth century most of the area’s old-growth forests had vanished. Fortunately, Yarmouth also had easy access to the Atlantic Ocean and led many residents to work as whalers and ship captains. In 1854, Captain Asa Eldrige became the first American skipper to successfully navigate his vessel around the Cape of Good Hope. Today, Yarmouth is a popular tourist destination with just under 24,000 permanent residents.
If you’re looking for Colonial, sea-faring history then Yarmouth has you covered. Stop by the former home of Captain Bangs Hallet—now a museum and headquarters of the Historical Society of Yarmouth—if you want to learn about the town’s passion for sailing. Several prominent organizations, such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the original storefront of Christmas Tree Shops are also located in Yarmouth.
Several famous Americans have called Yarmouth home, including Civil War major general Joseph Eldridge Hamblin, baseball outfielder Keith Reed, and decorated colonial Ranger John Gorham.
