Acushnet was originally settled as part of Dartmouth which was settled in 1650, although the area that now consists of Acushnet wasn’t settled until 1659. It wasn’t incorporated as a town until 1860 when it was named Acushnet, after the Wampanoag tribe’s word Cushnea, which meant “peaceful resting place near water.”
When Dartmouth was originally settled, there were only thirty-four settlers. The original settlement of Dartmouth included the present towns of Acushnet, Fairhaven, New Bedford and Westport, all of which are best known for its ties to the sea. In 1787, New Bedford seceded from Dartmouth and contained the land of Acushnet; Acushnet would remain a part of New Bedford until 1860.
The Acushnet River runs through the town and historically helped to provide the biggest industry in town, the sea and whaling industries. The river leads into Buzzard’s Bay which leads to the Atlantic Ocean. It is here that many sea expeditions from town departed from, including the whaler Acushnet, which was once boarded by the famous author Herman Melville. This voyage helped inspire his most famous novel Moby Dick.
Acushnet has since been the headquarters of the world famous Titleist brand which manufactures golf balls, clubs and other products.
Gideon Nye was born in Acushnet where he first found his love for the sea. Nye travelled to China for the first time in 1831, and fell in love with the culture. He went on to become a wealthy merchant. He lived in Canton, China where he would work as a merchant for over fifty years.
