Berkley was first settled by European settlers in 1637, as part of the town Taunton, and in 1639 Taunton was incorporated. The original purchase of the land was made from the Nemasket Indians who successfully used the land prior to settlers arrival. In 1735, Berkley seceded from Taunton under the name Berkley, a testament to George Berkeley who was a philosopher from England.
Prior to settlers arrival, natives referred to the land in present day Berkley as Cohannet. After the land was purchased from the natives, the remaining natives that lived on the land were relocated to the town Ponkapoag, which was a Praying Indian town in present day Canton. This strained relationship with natives also led to battles during King Philip’s War to be fought in Taunton.
Taunton originally also contained the towns Dighton and Berkley, but the travel distance to attend church and school became a burden for many; and in 1735, Berkley seceded. Since this time Berkley has been known as primarily a small agricultural town. Of all towns in Bristol County, Berkley is the least populated.

Among the historic sites in town, Dighton Rock is the most prominent, and has created national news. Dighton Rock is located in Dighton State Park and is known for its markings. The eighty-five acre park protects the rock which has unkown petro-glyphs carved into it. It’s originas are unknown, but highly debated. It has been argued that they were created by natives, Vikings, ancient Portugese, ancient Phoenicians or the ancient Chinese.
