According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Fairhaven was ranked 51st in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 improving from 43rd in 2012. However, it was 83rd for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 76th in 2012.

Fairhaven was first settled by European settlers in 1659 and was originally known as “Cushnea,” which was a part of the whole of Dartmouth and later New Bedford. In 1812, the area was incorporated under the name Fairhaven after having generally opposing feelings regarding the War of 1812 with neighboring New Bedford.
Prior to being settled by Europeans, the area was thickly settled by native Wampanoag tribes, who used the areas fertile lands and nearby water sources for food. After early English settlers purchased the land from the natives, settlers soon moved to the area, among these early settlers was an ancestor of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and also a pilgrim who came to America on the Mayflower.
Originally set up as an agrarian based community, industry soon followed. Like many coastal towns, the ship building and whaling industries boomed and helped make Fairhaven a successful and growing town. The whaling industry especially made this town relevant. For well over 100 years, whale oil was the primary fuel used in illumination, thus making areas with high whale populations profitable places. As the whaling industry diminished, it fell back to its maritime roots and began producing ships, rope and sails.
Today, the town is a seaside community of 16,000 with many naval ties. Sharing a harbor with neighboring New Bedford has helped develop this town into a tourist site, with many restaurants and shops in town.
Among the more popular sites in town are two popular beaches, historic walking tours and a plethora of eateries. The beaches in town are Fort Phoenix Beach and West Island Beach. Popular during summer months, these beach are known for their long sandy beach which stretch over a mile long. Another outdoor recreation site is the Phoenix Rail Trail bike path. A three mile long path connects to the much longer twenty-six mile Mattapoissett Rail Trail. The trail stretches from the thick woods to along the sandy beaches, thoroughly displaying the nature of the town.
Christopher Reeve is best known for his career in film and his involvement in the medical field. Born and raised in New York City, Reeves would work a series of odd jobs growing up before attending Cornell University where he realized his love for acting and graduated in 1974 with a degree in Theater. Reeve’s first major role in film would prove to be the work which he was best known for, the titular character of the Superman series. He was known to have kept a sailboat in Fairhaven throughout his life.
Albert Pike was a nineteenth century educator, political activist, and soldier born in Boston and raised in Newburyport. After attending school in Newburyport, he applied to colleges and was accepted to Harvard University, he elected not to go and he became self-educated. He would eventually become an educator himself and taught all over Eastern Massachusetts in the towns, Bedford, Fairhaven, Gloucester. After his time as an educator, he moved to Arkansas where he would own and write for a popular newspaper called the Arkansas Advocate. Following this he became a lawyer and political activist. While he fought for the Confederate Army in the Civil War, he maintained the viewpoint that he wished the south to remain part of the Union, so long they received equal rights. Pike died in 1891,at the age of eighty-one.
Captain Joshua Slocum is best known as the first person to sail around the world by themselves. He was born in Nova Scotia, Slocum despised the area and made several attempts at running away. At the age of sixteen he succeeded and began his life as a seaman, sailing the world. He eventually found permanent residence in San Francisco, where he continues his passion of sailing, this time as a Captain. He eventually settled in Fairhaven where he began constructing as boat on which to sail the world; on April, 24, 1895, he set out on his adventure. He returned over three years later on June 27, 1898.
