Raynham was incorporated as a town on April 2, 1731, after it had been separated from the eastern end of Taunton in Bristol County, where the iron works was located.
Town leaders from the first families petitioned the Massachusetts General Court three times before Raynham was allowed to become independent from Taunton.
For more than two centuries, the iron works was the dominant industry in the town. The town also had other small manufacturing companies including; a grist mill, sawmills, a straw hat factory, and several shoe manufacturers.
Despite these industries, Raynham was still a rural town that depended on farming. Some small farms in Raynham specialized in growing fruit including strawberries, peaches, and apples.
Known as the site of the earliest successful iron works (1652), Raynham is now a thriving, successful community. Once a rural hamlet, the town has become a suburban bedroom community. But because of its location at the crossroads of major roadways, it is also a commercial center in its own right. Raynham Woods Commerce Park, a 330-acre site, is home to some major corporations and is one of the premier industrial parks in Southeastern Massachusetts. Business thrives along two major corridors, Routes 44 and 138.
Raynham offers recreational programs and facilities for children and adults. The town’s 300-acre Borden Colony complex has fields for soccer, baseball, and softball plus acres of forest and farmlands for passive recreation. Johnson’s Pond is open to the public for fishing, ice-skating, picnicking, and boating. In addition, the town has numerous conservation areas for the preservation of the natural environment.
The Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park is located in Raynham but racing at the park ended on January 1, 2010 when the state banned all greyhound racing. The building now hosts simulcast racing.
