Originally settled in 1626, Beverly, MA was incorporated in 1668, named after the town of the same name in England. After the first settlers arrived, more colonist were sent from England to establish a fishing industry.
Beverly, a neighboring town of Salem, also had a role in the Salem Witch Trials, where four convictions were made. Among the more prominent accusations was that the wife of Minister John Hale was a witch. John Hale who was notoriously against witchcraft, had a change of heart after learning of the accusation and also played a role in turning public opinion of believing in witchcraft.
During the 1700s Beverly was a relatively quiet community until the Revolutionary War started. Then a fishing and trading community, Beverly assembled the first U.S. military ship named Hannah that saw battle on October 10, 1775. Since this was the first commissioned ship for battle, it is said that Beverly is the “Birthplace of the Navy.” Beverly is also known as the “Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution,” as the first cotton mill was built here and the largest of its time.
Since then Beverly has been incorporated as a city, and has become a summer destination for many New England residents who come for the five beaches and various yacht clubs.
Beverly’s geographic make-up is about one-third water and also two-thirds land, thus there are many beaches in the area. Four beaches are located within Beverly, Brackenbury Beach, Dane Street Beach, Mingo Beach and Rice’s Beach. Outside of Beverly, in the neighboring towns are beaches like Crane Beach in Ipswich, Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester and Winter Island Park in Manchester. Other attractions in Beverly include the world’s longest running magician show at the Cabot Street Cinema Theatre. The theatre hosted the Le Grand David, the longest running magic show in the world beginning in 1977 and through 2012.
David McWane, lead singer of the Ska band Big D and the Kids Table, was born in Beverly. Outside of his band David has gained notoriety as an author, writing poetry, short stories and novels as well as creating an environmental program call “A First Step.”
Jonathan Manzi born and raised in Beverly, is known as the youngest person ever to become a millionaire. He first got his start by opening the company Vintage Network at eighteen years old. Since then he has since become a majority owner of four multi-million dollar companies.
William Howard Taft was the 27th president of the United States and served from 1909-1913. Taft took summer residency in Beverly, where he named his house Woodbury Point.
