The town of Peabody was originally settled within the neighboring Salem in 1626, known at the time as “The Farms” and the “Northfields.” In 1752 the area seceded from Salem and formed Danvers, until changing for good in 1855. The name wasn’t changed to “Peabody” until 1686, and was named after George Peabody a local philanthropist.
Much like the neighboring city Salem, Peabody is known for its history in the Witch Trials of 1692. Fortunately only two settlers from Peabody were killed, Giles and his wife Martha Corey, their resting ground is located near Crystal Lake.
Other than being known for the Witch Trials, as its nickname “The Tanner City” evokes Peabody is also known for its leather industry. Many nearby towns industries consisted of mills, but lack of a good water source left Peabody to be creative and use leather tanneries as their main economy. As the twentieth century came, many tanneries were closed and the automobile industry, shopping centers and technology companies came to Peabody and make up the local economy.
Among the most popular recreation spots in Peabody are the Salem Country Club and The Meadow at Peabody, which are both eighteen hole golf courses located within the town. Salem Country Club is famous for hosting events such as the 2001 Men’s Senior Open Championship and the USGA Women’s Open twice. Another popular location is the Northshore Mall. Built in 1958, this mall is now home to 120 stores.
Bobby Carpenter is a former NHL player who was born in Beverly, but was raised in Peabody, and holds three merits for American hockey players. The first is that he was the first American player to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated, he was also the first American hockey player to be drafted in the first round of the NHL draft, and lastly, he was the first American hockey player to play directly out of high school. Over the course of his eighteen year career, he played four years for the Boston Bruins and amassed 728 point in 1,178 career games.
Nathaniel Bowditch was a ship captain and mathematician who lived during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. He is best known as the author of The New American Practical Navigator, which is still used by Navy on all commissioned ships. Bowditch was a resident of Peabody for the later part of his life.
Jack Welch is a famous businessman who served as CEO of General Electric for twenty years, retiring in 2001. During his time as CEO he made GE 4,000% more valuable and become known for his business mentality and the term Stockholder Value.
