First settled by settlers in the 1630’s, Billerica was originally a Praying Indian town. After receiving a grant to settle the land in 1641, Billerica started a settlement and in 1655 it was incorporated and named after the town in England named Billericay. Billerica is unique in that it is the only town with that name in the United States.
Billerica was first known as being the location of a Praying Indian settlement. Praying Indians were natives that were converted by European settlers to their religion, Christianity. John Elliott was the leader of this settlement, which reached over 1,000 in numbers.
After the Praying Indian settlement started to vanish, the new village for settlers was created. This village was primarily supported by the agriculture in the town, and the fish and nutrients brought in by the Shawsheen and Concord Rivers running through the town. As the American Industrial Revolution came, Billerica followed suit and became a more developed town. Mills were built along both the Concord and Shawsheen Rivers. These mills would produce and manufacture goods ranging from textile to paper, to tanneries.
Since then, Billerica has become one of the larger towns in Middlesex county with a population that numbers just over 40,000. It is also the home of the Middlesex Canal, built in 1794, it became the first canal built in the country.
Among the popular leisure places in Billerica are Nutting Lake and Miccozzi Beach. In the summer months, residents are drawn to the small family beach that also has a volleyball court, basketball court, a playground as well as fishing and kayak access. For historic sites in the town, there are two major sites, the Middlesex Canal and the Mills Historic District. While the Middlesex Canal is no longer in operation, there are paths that still outline where the canals ran through. Along the paths are markers displaying where different important points were along the canal. The Mills District is a location along the Concord River where The C.P. Talbot & Company had buildings. The operations lasted over 100 years until it closed in 1956
