In 1633 the first colonists, led by John Oldham, explored the area that is now Framingham. Less than twenty years later it became settled, and in 1700 it became incorporated. The name Framingham came from the hometown of an official of the Massachusetts Bay Colony named Thomas Danforth.
After John Oldham first step foot in the town it took fourteen years for the first settlers to come to Framingham. John Stone who prior moving to Framingham lived in Sudbury, uprooted his family and became the first settlers of Framingham. In 1660, Thomas Danforth was awarded over 15,000 acres for compensation as a politician, and named the land after his home in England. Danforth was notorious for playing a role in the Salem Witch Trials and for his opposition to the incorporation of Framingham as a town until his death in 1699. After the settlement had been petitioning to be incorporated since 1693, it was finally granted after Danforth’s death.
The 1700’s remained relatively quiet until the Revolutionary War. In 1775, General Thomas Gage ordered three of his men to survey the trail to Worcester stopping in Framingham along the way. Upon their return General Gage chose to send his troops to Lexington and Concord as opposed to Framingham and Worcester. Framingham assembled two militias which totaled 130 men.
