Wilmington was first settled as part of Woburn in the mid seventeenth century. Less than 100 years later in 1730, it became incorporated as Wilmington, after seceding from Woburn and also from parcels of land in Billerica and Reading. Throughout its history, Wilmington was known for its important role in the transportation of goods from the rural towns of Middlesex County, to the bustling cities of Boston and Lowell. The formation of the Middlesex Canal came in 1803 and it ran through Wilmington allowing for increased trade throughout the area. The main goods that were shipped along the canal were cotton and hops. Today the town of over 22,000 residents has a mix of both business and residential areas.
