The Town of Bellingham was named for the third governor of the colony of Massachusetts Bay, Sir Richard Bellingham. Bellingham was born in England in 1591 and educated as a lawyer there. He was one of the original 26 members to draft the Massachusetts Bay Colony Charter, established in Boston by Puritan leaders for religious and political refuge. In 1719, Bellingham was the last town incorporated in Norfolk County.
Bellingham was once an active and flourishing manufacturing town, producing boots, shoes, and other leather goods. During the Industrial Revolution, several man-made ponds were constructed to support industry in land that had been swamp. Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man and enlisted as “Robert Shurtlieff” at Bellingham, near the end of the Revolutionary War. She was America’s first female soldier.
Arcand Park Beach on Wrentham Road is open from April 1 to November 1. Fishing is allowed but anyone 15 years of age and older must have a license. Boats, canoes, kayaks, and others floating items may be used on Jenks Pond.
Maplegate Country Club is located in an isolated area just off Interstate 495 in Bellingham and Franklin. The site of the golf course and its facilities is set on 150 acres of rolling hills covered with beautiful maple, beech, oak, and white pine trees. John Milton Thayer was born in Bellingham on January 24, 1820. He was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War and a United States Senator from Nebraska. Thayer served as Governor of Wyoming Territory and Governor of Nebraska. Thayer died in Lincoln, Nebraska on March 19, 1906.
Levi Cook was born in Bellingham on December 16, 1792. He was an American businessman and politician who served two terms as the mayor of Detroit, Michigan, and one term in the Michigan House of Representatives. Cook died in Detroit, Michigan on December 2, 1866.
