Canton was incorporated in 1797 from neighboring town Stoughton. The name Canton came from the idea that Canton, China is on the complete opposite side of the world and was given to the town by Elijah Dunbar.
Canton is best known for being the headquarters for major corporations like Reebok, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Computershare among others. It provides many of the locals with jobs and in 2011 1,124 residents of Canton worked at Reebok’s headquarters. Canton is also known as being the home of famous Revolutionary War and patriot Paul Revere. It was in Canton where Revere built the nation’s first Copper Rolling Mill and wrote the poem “Canton Dale” about Canton.
Outside of the abundance of industry in town, Canton also has recreational sites like Great Blue Hill and the Blue Hills Ski Area. The highest point in Norfolk County, Great Blue Hill got its name from the blue granite that is seen all along the hill. Popular in the warmer months for the hiking trails and scenic views, it doubles in the winter as an alpine ski mountain with eight trails. The popular radio station WGBH got its name from the hill as the acronym of Great Blue Hills is GBH.
Former NBA player Dave Cowens played for eleven years, ten of those were for the Boston Celtics. During his tenure with the Celtics, he was awarded an MVP award, won two championships and was an All-Star seven times. He lived in Canton while playing in Boston.
Paul Guilfoyle was born and raised in Canton, although he didn’t attend the high school, opting to attend Boston College High School. Guiulfoyle is best known for his continuous role as Captain Jim Brass for all fourteen seasons of the hit TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
Paul Revere the famous American patriot and silversmith lived in Canton starting in 1801 where he would spend summers and travel to his home in Boston for winters until his death in 1818. While in Canton, Revere famously started the first copper rolling mill in America. Copper produced at this mill was used for projects like building the roof at the New York City Hall, and casting over 700 cannons used in the American Civil War.
NFL football player Randy Moss is a former wide receiver for the New England Patriots who lived in Canton while playing for the team. Moss a future Hall of Famer, has set many records including most recieving touchdowns in a single season and is a seven time All-Star.
