Dedham was first settled in 1635 by residents of the neighboring towns, Roxbury and Watertown. One year later it was incorporated. At the time residents wanted to name it Contentment, but the ruling was overturned for Dedham, a town in England where many of the settlers were from.
After its incorporation in 1639 Dedham created the Mother Brook. This was the first man-made canal in the nation and connected the Charles and Neponset Rivers. In doing this they also set up some of the first industry in the area through mills located along the canal. In 1682 all settlers of Dedham lived within a mile-and-a-half radius of the town meetinghouse. As more settlers came the need for expansion took over and towns like Bellingham, Medfield, Needham and Walpole were all created from Dedham.
Dedham is also known for its military involvement. From the time the residents received word of the Revolutionary War, all able bodied men went to war. At the time the population was between 1,500 to 2,000 and nearly 700 men assembled a militia.
After the war, Norfolk County was formed and Dedham was named as the county seat. Solomon Willard, the same man who built the Bunker Hill Monument, constructed a courthouse which still stands today. Dedham became a suburban center during the nineteenth century. Railroads which ran through town allowed for more industry and the population of the town doubled in fifty years. Residents opened up taverns for locals and this attracted politicians to campaign in this town. Andrew Jackson, and Abraham Lincoln both came to Dedham to campaign and spend time in the town.
As the twentieth century came, Dedham became the locations for a variety of things: the schools Noble and Greenough School and Ursuline Academy, the Sacco and Vanzetti trial and massive estates.
One of the things Dedham is most famous for is being home to the first man-made canal by English settlers in America. At the time it was used for irrigation due to the lack of elevation change along the Charles River. It is also home to the Fairbanks house, built in 1641, it is the oldest timber-frame house still in existence in the United States to date.
Freddie Roach is a former boxer and current boxing and Mixed Martial Arts coach. After a successful career in which he fought over fifty times he retired and went on to become one of the premier fighting coaches in the world. He has trained fighters such as Manny Pacquiao, Mike Tyson, Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre. Roach was born in Dedham and spent much of his life there before his career took off.
George F. Williams was born in Dedham in 1852 and lived there until he graduated Dedham High School in 1868. He was a prominent lawyer in Boston and was also a member of the United States House of Representatives in 1890. Later in life he was the U.S. Ambassador to Greece and Montenegro.
Leon A. Edney born and raised in Dedham enlisted in the Navy as an officer after attending Harvard University. Throughout his career he held titles such as Supreme Allied Commander, Commodore Admiral, NATO Supreme Allied Commander and Commander in Chief of U.S. Atlantic Command.

One of our home security system customers in Dedham was concerned about potential property damage resulting from burst pipes while they were away during the winter months. The customer wanted a system in place to monitor and prevent their pipes from freezing and flooding their home.
