Randolph was called Cochaticquom by the local Cochato and Ponkapoag tribes. The town was incorporated in 1793 from what was formerly the south precinct of the town of Braintree. The town was named after Peyton Randolph, first president of the Continental Congress.
Randolph was formerly the home of several large shoe companies. Many popular styles were made exclusively in Randolph, including the “Randie.” Ultimately, shoemaking became the town’s major industry. From 1850 until the beginning of the 1900s, Randolph was one of the nation’s leading boot producers, shipping boots as far away as California and Australia. The inspiration for the nationally observed “smoke-out day” came from former Randolph High School Guidance councilor Arthur Mullaney.
The Jonathan Belcher House on North Main Street was built in 1806 by Jonathan Belcher and his wife Abigail (Thayer) who had been married on April 12, 1792. Their son, also named Jonathan, married Hannah (Jordan) and later added to the house. Jonathan and Hannah’s granddaughter, Abigail Tower Tarbell, gave the house to The Ladies Library Association in 1911. The association later changed its name to the Randolph Womens Club. The house is used for weddings and other events and is occasionally open to the public. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 30, 1976.
The Ponkapoag Camp of Appalachian Mountain Club is a historic camp of the Appalachian Mountain Club located on the eastern shore of Ponkapoag Pond. The camp was built in 1920 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is open year round for hiking, paddling, swimming, skiing, and camping.
The Gills Farm Archeological District is located near a river. However, the exact location of the archaeological sites is not made public. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, the district encompasses a prehistoric Middle Archaic archaeological site containing, among other finds, evidence of Neville and Stark projectile points. The site was named for the Gill family that owned the property as part of a dairy farm that bordered Center Street in Holbrook.
Danny Davis was born in Randolph on May 29, 1925, Davis was a country music band leader, trumpet player, vocalist and producer. He was best known as the founder and leader of the Nashville Brass. He died in Nashville on June 12, 2008.
Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman was born in Randolph on October 31, 1852. Freeman was was a prominent 19th-century American author. While working as secretary to the author and physician, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., she began writing poetry and novels with a strong New England regional flavor. She died in Metuchen, New Jersey on March 13, 1930.
Eugene Leo McAuliffe was born in Randolph on February 28, 1872. McAuliffe was a Major League Baseball catcher who played for the Boston Beaneaters. McAuliffe was 32 years old when he broke into the big leagues on August 17, 1904. He died in Randolph on April 29, 1953.
