Abington was first settled by the Europeans in 1668. The town was part of the Bridgewater Purchase made on March 23, 1650 from Massasoit, Chief of the Wampanoag Federation. The lands included the current towns of Bridgewater, Rockland, Whitman, and parts of Hanover. The town was officially incorporated in 1712. In 1706, the town had been named by Governor Joseph Dudley as a tribute to Anne Venables-Bertie, Countess of Abington, Cambridgeshire, who helped him secure the governorship of the colony from Queen Anne.
The manufacture of shoes and boots was the main industry of Abingdon. Almost half of the footwear provided for the Union Army during the Civil War was provided by Abington factories.
In 1952, Nathan Swartz bought a half interest in the Abington Shoe Company in Abington, buying the rest of the company three years later. In 1965, the Swartz family introduced injection-molding technology to the footwear industry, making all of the shoes and boots the company produced waterproof.
The Swartz family developed the Timberland brand name in 1973. Timberland, now headquartered in Stratham, New Hampshire, was the first shoe company to guarantee waterproof shoes and boots. The Timberland Abington Fall 2014 collection pays homage to Abington.
Island Grove Park, bordered by Central Street and Park Road, is a beautiful 11-acre park considered by many to be “The Crown Jewel of Abington.” Surrounded on three sides by the 35-acre Island Grove Pond, this peaceful pine-shaded park features a large lifeguard-protected sand bottom swimming pool, charcoal grill equipped picnic area, swing sets, bathrooms, snack shack, walking trails, fishing, a gazebo, and is also home to the Eager Beaver summer day camp.
Historically, Island Grove was an important meeting place for abolitionists during the middle of the 1800s. On March 6, 2002 Island Grove Park was named to the National Register of Historic Places.
John L. Sullivan was born in Roxbury on October 12. A bare-knuckle boxer and the first modern world heavyweight champion, Sullivan lived in Abington after he retired. He died there on February 2, 1918.
Jared Christopher Monti was born in Abington on September 20, 1975. Monti was a soldier in the U.S. Army who received the military’s highest decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in Afghanistan. Monti died in Gowardesh, Afghanistan on June 21, 2006.
Aaron Hobart was born in Abington on June 26, 1787. Hobart pursued classical studies and graduated from Brown University in 1805. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and set up a law practice in Abington. Aaron served as member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Massachusetts State Senate. He was also a U.S. Representative from March 4, 1823 to March 3, 1827.
