Bridgewater was first settled in 1650 as part of Duxbury. Incorporated in 1656, it was one of the first interior towns of Massachusetts. Bridgewater was placed in Plymouth County when counties were formed in 1685. Originally the town included large parts of the towns of West Bridgewater, Brockton, Abington, Hanson, East Bridgewater and Pembroke. Although the origin of Bridgewater’s name is not known, the town seal includes the Bridgwater, England coat of arms.
Bridgewater is home to Bridgewater State University. Founded in 1840, as one of the first normal schools in America, BSU is one of the state’s public universities. The town is also known for its iron works factories. One of these factories, the Bridgewater Iron Works, is a registered historical site in Massachusetts. The majority of the Iron Works factory was torn down in 1994 and turned into a park, which is named Ironworks Park.
The Old Bridgewater Historical Museum Building on Howard Street is a beautiful example of turn-of -the century Greek Revival architecture. Built in 1901, it contains many historical documents and examples of period objects and crafts.
The Keith House, the 17th century parsonage of Rev. James Keith, is one of the oldest parsonages in America. The building, maintained by the Old Bridgewater Historical Society, was restored to its original 1662 condition on the original site.
The First Parish Church on School Street was constructed in 1845 on the site of the first meeting house. John Washburn, one of the early settlers of the Parish of South Bridgewater, gave two acres for the construction of the first meeting house and for the adjacent burial ground. his wife Rebecca was the first person to be laid to rest in the new graveyard. The first meeting house was dedicated on June14, 1717.
Nathaniel Ames was born in Bridgewater on July 22, 1708. Ames, an American almanac-maker and physician, published the first annual American almanac. He died in Dedham on July 11, 1764.
Gordon Stanley “Mickey” Cochrane was born in Bridgewater on April 6, 1903. Cochrane was a professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball as a catcher for the Philadelphia Athletics and Detroit Tigers. Cochrane was considered one of the best catchers in baseball history and is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He died in Lake Forest, Illinois on June 28, 1962.
Elder Love Brewster was born around 1611 in Leiden, Holland. He traveled with his father, mother and brother on the Mayflower, reaching what became the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts in 1620. Brewster was one of the founders of Bridgewater. Brewster died in Duxbury on October 6, 1650.
