The area that would become Hanover, MA, was settled in 1649 by English colonists such as William Barstow, who built a bridge along the North River near present-day Washington Street. Initially, this land comprised the westernmost portion of Scituate but separated and was officially incorporated as a town in 1727. The town’s name is likely a tribute to the first Hanoverian King of Great Britain, King George I. Oddly enough, the king passed away just days before the town was incorporated but the news did not reach the colonists for several months.
The early portion of Hanover’s history revolved around farming, several small mills and a shipbuilding facility along the North River. In later years, the town developed the world’s first tack-making machine and expanded its industry portfolio to include tacks, fireworks and shoe-makers through the 19th century. Now the town is almost entirely residential and as of 2010 had a population of just under 14,000.
You’ve got a few great choices for entertainment and recreation and Hanover. If canoeing piques your interest, the town has taken great pains to ensure you can still navigate almost all of Hanover’s original waterways. And if you’re in town at the end of June, it’s worth stopping by for Hanover Day—the fireworks display is spectacular.
Hanover claims a few famous Americans, such as actress Nicole Marie Hiltz was born in town and went on to appear in several films, made-for-TV movies and television series. Her most notable performance was in the USA Network’s series In Plain Sight, which ran from 2008to 2012. Botanist and inventor George Washington Carver was also a resident of Hanover for several months while he worked on his autobiography.
