Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Lakeville area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
The town of Lakeville was first settled as part of Middleborough in 1717 but was not incorporated as a separate town until 1853. Lakeville’s name comes from a large system of lakes in town, although they are often called “ponds” by locals. These include Assawompset Pond, Great Quittacas Pond, Little Quittacas Pond, Pocksha Pond, and Long Pond. Both Assawompset and Long Pond are the sources of local area rivers.
Lakeville has a history of farming and cranberry harvesting and is now the corporate headquarters site of fruit juice giant Ocean Spray. The town also has a darker side; in 1675 the body of John Sassamon, advisor to Governor Josiah Winslow was found underneath the ice of Assawompsett Pond. Murder was the suspected cause and three Native Americans were arrested. Although it is now deemed likely they were not responsible, the public trial of these men was a contributing factor in King Philip’s War.
Looking for something to do in Lakewood? The Ocean Spray HQ site is home to 16 acres of walking trails, cranberry bogs and ponds, and worth a look if you’re in the area. And if you’re in town during October, it’s worth checking out the town’s Haunted House at Ted Williams Camp—if you dare.
Lakeville’s claim to fame isn’t its people, but the picturesque nature of the town and pond system. While there’s no record of particularly notable Americans who called Lakeville their home the town is nonetheless steeped in history and offers some a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of nearby Boston. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, the lack of famous faces could make Lakeville the ideal vacation spot.
