Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Plymouth area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
Plymouth was settled in 1620 when settlers came on the Mayflower. Prior to settlers arrival, the land was inhabited by Wampanoag natives. After colonists explored the land in 1614 and in 1617, nearly all natives were wiped out. Early settler John Smith named Plymouth after the port they departed from in England.
Plymouth is known for being the origin of America, hence its nickname “America’s Hometown.” It was here that the pilgrims found refuge after breaking away from England after sailing on the Mayflower and arriving in 1620.
On December eighteenth of that same year, European settlers first set foot on American soil. 102 settlers came on the Mayflower and during the winter months, they built up the plantation during the day and returned to the Mayflower at night to sleep. As Spring came, they began to move permanently onto shore where they encountered the natives, most notably Squanto, who became mediator and translator between the two sides after living on the plantation. The relationship between Squanto and the settlers became vital to their success as Squanto taught them how to farm, fish and hunt and even helping set up a trading post. After co-existing for two years a peace treaty was signed and celebrated through a feast, this is still celebrated in what we all know as Thanksgiving.
Through the eighteenth and nineteenth century, Plymouth mainly served as fishing and trade village. Over time it became the largest rope producer in the world, through the Plymouth Cordage Company. This company remained intact until the mid-twentieth century when synthetic ropes became cheaper and easier to make.
In the twenty-first century, like many towns located on the south shore, Plymouth has seen a rapid increase in population; in the past twenty years alone, the population has gone up 145%. Plymouth was the first settlement in New England and among the firsts in the country.
Plymouth is rich in history and has many locations where this heritage is displayed. Plymouth rock is said to be where the Pilgrims first set foot in America, and although it was frequently moved in the past, it now resides in Pilgrim Memorial State Park, which although the smallest state park, it is the most frequented. A replica of the Mayflower called the “Mayflower II” is located in Plymouth Center and it operates as a museum. Plymouth is also the home of Plymouth Plantation which is a live museum. It is a recreation of the first settlement where visitors can interact with people who act as though they are from the time of the original settlement.
