Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Scituate area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
The town of Scituate was first settled by a group from Plymouth in 1627, later joined by immigrants from Kent, England. Initially, the town was governed by the General Court of Plymouth but incorporated as a separate entity in October 1636, deriving its name form the Wampanoag word for “cold brook,” which refers to a brook running through the center of Scituate. Today, the town is mostly residential with a population of just over 18,000.
Fishing formed the bulk of early industry in Scituate, along with sea mossing efforts. While most of the town’s history was quiet, a few notable events are worth mentioning. During King Philip’s War, for example, twelve small homes and a sawmill were destroyed by raiding parties. And during the War of 1812, the Old Scituate Light was key in driving back a British naval raiding party. When they approached, the two daughters of the lighthouse keeper began playing loudly on a drum and fife, making it seem as though an American force lay in wait. The girls are often called the “American Army of Two.”
Scituate is known for its historic buildings, so if you’re in town it’s worth stopping by Lawson Tower, built in 1902 to cover the town’s original “eyesore” water tower. The view from the top is breathtaking but check with the Town of Scituate Historical Society for dates and times it is open to the public. Heading to the Old Scituate Light light is also a must — this piece of American history also comes with a stunning view of the harbor.
More than a few famous Americans hail from Scituate. There’s George W. Casey, Jr., who was the Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 2007-2011, William Cushing, one of the six original justices to sit on the Supreme Court and Dave Silk, former NHL forward and member of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” gold-medal winning Olympic hockey team.
