The town of Bolton, MA was incorporated on June 24th, 1738 after a steady stream of settlers chose to put down roots in the area. Original European inhabitants of Bolton settled there beginning the early 1680s and by 1711 town historian Esther Whitcomb reported that over 150 people were living in Bolton. Formerly part of Lancaster, Bolton seceded along the Still River and this remains the current boundary. Today, just under 5000 people live in this largely residential community.
Bolton’s history is agrarian and mostly uneventful, but there are a few points of note. First is the fact that the area around Bolton was given to large-scale native American uprisings and at least one massacre took place in town—nonetheless, settlers refused to move. The town’s economy has remained fairly consistent over almost three hundred years; farming accounted for most of Bolton’s revenue, with fruit picking and poultry raising industries taking shape during the 1920s. H.P. Lovecraft also mentioned Bolton several times in his works of science fiction.
