Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Brookfield area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
Brookfield, MA was first settled in 1660 but was not incorporated until 1718. The original settlers were men from Ipswich claiming territory for the Quaboag Plantation. During King Phillip’s War, a Nipmuck raiding party attacked the isolated town. With no aid in sight, Brookfield’s 80 residents took shelter in the town’s garrison—two days later they emerged to find all other buildings destroyed, and the land lay vacant for twelve years.
Brookfield claims two unique tales: The story of Bathsheba Spooner and the visit of George Washington. Bathsheba was married to Joshua Spooner, a wealthy farmer and notorious drunkard; while the pair had three children together she felt an “utter aversion” for her husband. With the help of a young Continental solider and two British deserters she hatched a plot to end Spooner’s life—it was later called the “most extraordinary crime ever perpetrated in New England.”
George Washington, meanwhile, came through the town on his first official tour as President of the United States. He would have slept in Brookfield but for the innkeeper, who had a headache and mistook him for a college president and sent him on to the next town.
Brookfield is surrounded by water, and there are several protected wildlife areas nearby. It’s also worth checking out local attractions like Old Sturbridge Village, which features buildings and actors depicting life in 1830s Colonial America—a must if you’re a history buff.
Several famous Americans called Brookfield home. Bathsheba Spooner is perhaps more infamous than famous, but there’s also congressman William Appleton, author Mary Jane Hawes and Elise the Cow, mascot for the Borden Dairy Company.
