It wasn’t until 1721 that Douglas was first settled by Europeans. The settlement was originally called New Sherborn, however after becoming incorporated in 1746, it was renamed Douglas after a doctor named William Douglas, who donated a large sum of money for schools to be built in the town.
Prior to European settlers finding refuge in Douglas, the area was home to a group of natives. The Nipmuc people of the Algonquian tribe had settled the land for years and established a sustainable hunting and fishing community.
After settlers had moved into the town the primary industry was agriculture. With the rise in population, railroads started coming through the town and it became a crossroad for travelers. Many Inns and taverns were built to support the increased traffic. Mills were also built in the town as another source of income for residents. Along the river were also lush forests, which brought a lumbering industry to the town. With this industry coming to town, the Douglas Axe Company was created and found extreme success, remaining a prominent company internationally for over 100 years.
As the town entered the twentieth century, the major industry was working in the woolen mills located throughout town. By 1950, over ninety percent of all laborers in the town worked at the mills in town. Today, Douglas remains a small town and is best known for the continued use of its mill buildings which for the past 200 years have always provided business to the blooming town.
