East Brookfield holds the recognition for the most recently incorporated town in Massachusetts. Although it was first settled in 1664, it wasn’t until 1920 that it was incorporated and named for its geographical location from the town it seceded from, Brookfield.
Prior to the settlement of Brookfield, the land was inhabited by native tribes of Lashaway and Quaboag natives. The Seven Mile and Quaboag Rivers provided the ability to trade with other tribes along the rivers and also provided food through the surplus of fish and the arable land along its banks.
After settlers arrived in the late seventeenth century, they too took advantage of the rivers and set up the Quaboag Plantation. At first the settlers solely used the rivers for the nutrients they provided, but by the mid eighteenth century, they began expanding their use of the Rivers and began building mills. With the increased production through the mills in town, the railroad soon followed and it too brought more infrastructure and population to town.
Today, East Brookfield is primarily a bedroom community, located in a rural, and heavily forested area. The proximity to major highways make this town ideal for those seeking the peacefulness of a country town but also need to commute for work.

Among the more popular sites in town are many rivers and lakes which are especially popular in the summer months. Sites like Lake Lashaway, Quacumquasit Pond, as well as the local rivers provide summer fun including kayaking and fishing. Over thirteen different kinds of fish have been known to live in Lake Lashaway, some of which are Bass, Perch, Pike and Bullheads. The Hodgkins School, first built in 1882, was the oldest operating school in Massachusetts until it was closed in 2002. It now operates as the East Brookfield Historical Museum.
