Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Gardner area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
In 1764 Gardner was first settled as part of present day neighboring towns Ashburnham, Templeton, Westminster and Winchendon. In 1785 it seceded and formed its own town, named Gardner after Colonel Thomas Gardner. Gardner was a strong proponent for opposing the British laws prior to the Revolutionary War and was later killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Gardner was later re-incorporated as a city in 1923.
Gardner was originally made up of the north-western part of Westminster, the western part of Ashburnham, the south part of Winchendon, and the eastern part of Templeton. The original settlement of the town was nearly 400 settlers on twenty miles of land, with almost no industry; there were a few blacksmiths, carpenters and shoemakers.
The early years of growth were outlined with the rise of mills in the town. Much of the early mills in town were saw mills, which produced the lumber used for construction in and around the Gardner area. Among these mills were the Goodnow Mills, Parker & Bancroft Mills, and the E.C.J. & O.A. Travers Mills. Upon the heels of the mills’ success, many production companies began arriving in town. The most popular industries were furniture and silversmithing.
The furniture production was the more popular of the two, even giving way to the nickname “The Furniture Capital of the World.” In 1826, the nationally recognized furniture company, Heywood-Wakefield Company was created by five brothers. With the success of the chair business in town, it didn’t take long for other companies to emerge, and by 1910 among the multitude of manufacturing companies the town was producing over four million chairs in a year.
Today Gardner is one of the smaller cities in Worcester county, with a population of just over 20,000. With over twenty square miles in area, Gardner still is a a major manufacturing city nd continues to produce exceptional furniture to this day.
