First settled in 1643, it was called “Nashaway” after the local tribe of natives of the same name. Lancaster was incorporated in 1653, becoming the first town in Worcester County to become incorporated. The name Lancaster was chosen by the townspeople who chose to name the town after the town’s founder John Prescott’s hometown in England, Lancaster.
Prior to European settlers in town, Lancaster was settled by the Nashaway native tribe. The local lakes and rivers provided a great sanctuary for natives in the area. After settlers arrived and began colonizing the area, native populations quickly diminished. The strained relationship between natives and the settlers boiled over during King Philip’s War when natives attacked Lancaster and took hostage of some of the residents. The most notable of these was the capture of Mary Rowlandson, who eventually was released. An account of her capture was released in 1682, and was named A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.
