The area that makes up Milford was first settled in 1662 as a part of nearby Mendon. In 1780, the town seceded under the name “Mill River,” a name that was later changed to Milford, a testament to the nearby river.
Prior to the arrival of settlers, Milford was home to the Nipmuc native tribe. A deed to an eight square mile parcel of land was sold to settlers by the Nipmucs in 1662, which was settled shortly thereafter. Upon arrival, settlers formed a predominantly farming community, although some industry was in town, including a shoe manufacturing company. This industry became extremely well-known in town and at one point, Milford was the leading shoe manufacturing town in the country. The other big industry in town was the granite manufacturing industry. Milford granite is known for having pink streaks through it, and examples of this granite on display can be found at the Boston Public Library, Memorial Hall in Milford and the Main Post Office in New York City.
Today Milford has maintained a small, close-knit community feel although it has grown substantial in size. The town which has a population of around 28,000 celebrates its heritage through frequent town fairs occurring in summer months.
Restaurants:
Among the more prominent historic locations in town are Ted’s Diner and St. Mary’s Cemetery. Ted’s Diner was built in the 1920’s by the Teirney Diner Company. It remained open for nearly 100 years, and in 2000, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. St. Mary’s Cemetery is best known for the tower located within its premises. It is the site of the only Irish Round Tower in the country and is constructed from the local Milford Granite.
Jorge Rivera was born in Puerto Rico, but shortly after his birth, his family moved to Milford, where he was raised. After attending the local schools in the area, Rivera would join the military where he was exposed to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). He began MMA training when he was twenty-five and found immediate success, making his UFC debut in 2003. After a fight in 2012, he retired, amassing a respectable 20-9 career record.
Howie Long is a former NFL Defensive L:ineman, who played during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Born in nearby Charlestown and raised in Milford, Long was a star athlete for his high school. He would go on to attend Villanova College and was drafted forty-eighth overall in 1981. Over the course of his thirteen year career, Long was selected to eight Pro-Bowls, won one Super Bowl championship, and in 2000 he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Richard T. Moore was born in Milford where he was raised. He is best known for his ongoing involvement in politics. Prior to politics, he would attend Clark University, Colgate University and UMass Amherst. He currently serves as President Pro Tempore of the Massachusetts State Senate, the third highest ranking.
