North Brookfield was first settled in 1660 as part of neighboring Brookfield. The original settlement was largely agrarian based, and helped sustain the small community. As the settlement grew, more industry came to town, including rubber and shoe manufacturing businesses. As Brookfield’s population grew, the area that is now North Brookfield seceded in 1812, garnering the name North Brookfield due to the geographical location of the town which lies North of Brookfield.
Restaurants:
Recreation sites in Brookfield are mostly centered around the bodies of water in town. Lake Lashaway, Horse Pond, Doane Pond and Five Mile River, all provide outdoor recreation for locals. The 293 acre Lake Lashaway is used in the summer for activities such as boating, fishing, picnicking and swimming, and in the winter months, the Lake is used for ice skating and pond hockey. Long View Farm Studios is another notable site in town. Located on the property of a Clark University professor, many famous bands have come here to record albums such as Aerosmith, Cat Stevens, Death Cab for Cutie, The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder. Still in operation, musicians who wish to escape the big city environment come to Long View for the peace and quiet of the farm.
Bill Bergen is best known for his MLB career which spanned eleven seasons and two teams. Although he was a mediocre batter, he excelled as a catcher and was commonly referred to as one of the best defensive catchers the game has ever seen. Bergen and his family lived in North Brookfield during his youth.
Big Al Downing is best known for his career as a musician, and he moved to North Brookfield after his music career had come to a close. Born in Oklahoma, he was surrounded by the Country music scene. After his fascination with music grew, he sought to differentiate himself from other country stars so his style also adopted influences from Blues, Gospel, and Rock n’ Roll.
Francis Amasa Walker is best known for his involvement in business, economy and education. After being born in Boston, Walker and his family moved to North Brookfield where he was raised. After attending various schools in the area, he would go on to attend Amherst College at fifteen years old and would graduate in 1860 with a degree in Law. After graduating, he went on to become President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and would also hold numerous titles as a statistician and economist.
