After first being settled by colonists in 1749, it didn’t take long for the town to become incorporated, which came 1762. Throughout the town’s history, it was known predominantly an agriculture and farming town, but as industry came to the nearby area, it soon affected Oakham. Industry such as clothing, wagons and wire were constructed in town. It has maintained a small town feel through the population which is around 2,000 and the minimal industry in town.
